Sleep Dentistry

Do you feel anxious when you think about your upcoming dental appointment? Have you been struggling with dental fear and avoiding the dentist even when in pain? Many people encounter this phobia, which is common nowadays. At Serenity Dental Care we have the solution, if you reside in Portland, Oregon or the metropolitan area, the answer to all your dental phobia-related problems is sedation dentistry.

Relaxing Care for a Wide Range of Reasons

A woman meditating at a beautiful vista For those of us with dental anxiety, fear of shots, severe gag reflexes, complicated medical conditions (such as Alheimer’s, Parkinsons, Downs Syndrome, traumatic brain injury, etc), or young children, receiving dental care can be a stressful and frustrating experience even for simple procedures like a dental cleaning. Procedures that require lengthy appointment times can also be challenging, even for those who don’t have a fear of the dentist. At Serenity Dental we work as a team with a board certified anesthesiologist to help you sleep calmly through your dental appointments, helping you or your loved turn a stressful or lengthy procedure into a pleasant and comfortable experience.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry can be described as the use of medication to help patients relax and stress-free during a dental procedure. During the process, the patients are usually awake except for those who are under general anesthesia as seen at the Serenity Dental Care facility. There are some levels of sedation and the type of sedation is selected by the professionals at Serenity Dental Care according to the type of procedure and requirement of the specific patient. The levels of sedation are as follows:
•  When you are awake but relaxed, this is called minimal sedation.
•  When you don't remember much about the procedure and you slur your words during the procedure, it is called moderate sedation.
•  The condition when you are on the edge of consciousness and still can be awakened is known as deep sedation.
•  In general anesthesia, you are completely unconscious or asleep.

At Serenity Dental Care, our expert Dental Professionals (Dr. Thomas E. Clark, DMD and Dr. Terrence Clark, DMD FAGD) and Dental Anesthesiologist (Dr. Ryan Allred, DMD) take your complete history and use general anesthesia to carry out your treatment in a controlled, comfortable, and safe environment.

More Effective Than Conventional “Sleep Dentistry”

A man smiling, relaxing and reclining back into chair Most offices that offer “sleep dentistry” are actually providing “conscious sedation”, meaning you are still awake for you procedures. At Serenity Dental, we are one of the few dental practices in the state that provides the same high level of anesthesia services as found in a hospital setting with the same high degree of safety. Our sedation is deep, reliable, and easily adjusted to each individual patient. You will be completely relaxed, sleeping peacefully, and often having no memory of your procedure when you awake.

What is a Dental Anesthesiologist?

At Serenity Dental Care, we work with a Dental Anesthesiologist who is a Dentist with additional residency training in anesthesia. These Dental Anesthesiologists are equipped with modern knowledge and trained in the same environment as Medical Doctor Anesthesiologists. We offer a serene and comfortable sedation experience where we can offer our professional services in a safe and convenient setting to our valued customers of the Portland, Oregon and metropolitan area.
